Estimation of deep sedimentary layers in the Kanto plain from MCMC inversion of Rayleigh-wave phase velocity

Abstract
Rayleigh-wave phase velocities from previous explorations conducted by some of the authors in the Kanto basin were re-analyzed with inversions based on the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method. Observed errors of the phase velocities in a frequency range from 0.5 to 8 seconds at 104 sites were also used in the inversions to estimate 1D S-wave profiles of deep sediments with their uncertainties. The uncertainties of the profiles were estimated with frequency distributions of the S-wave velocities and the thicknesses of the sampled models in the inversions. We compare our profiles with those of Yamada and Yamanaka (2012). Our profiles are similar at sites in the central part of the basin. However, the two kinds of the profiles are different at the sites located in the marginal parts of the basin.
