Magnetotelluric 1-D Sparse Inversion

Abstract
Magnetotelluric (MT) method is a powerful geophysical tool for mapping and sounding subsurface resistivity distributions. This method is widely used in the exploration for geothermal resources. MT 1-D inversion is usually performed by using nonlinear least squares method with smoothness constrained requirement. However, we often have to take into consideration subsurface structure which has sharp boundaries such as a fault. In order to solve this problem, we developed 1-D sparse inversion program based on Fast Iterative Shrinkage Thresholding Algorithm (FISTA). In this program, we applied the L1 norm minimization to nonlinear least squares method. Some examples of MT 1-D sparse inversion using synthetic data are shown in this paper.
