Resistivity monitoring in column adsorption experiments of heavy metal contaminated water

Abstract
In Japan, problems of soil contamination and groundwater pollution are occurring due to leakage of harmful substances from factories and drainage facilities into the soil and leakage of leachate from the repository. In order to prevent the diffusion of these contaminations, PRB method and adsorption layer construction method are being implemented. A water quality survey using the observation wells are carried out to confirm the effect of these methods. However, observation wells are not suitable for monitoring over a wide area and the installation costs are expensive. Therefore, we conducted basic research to detect the effect of adsorption layer easily and widely using resistivity monitoring. For that purpose, the experimental column simulating the purification layer was prepared and the relationship between the heavy metal adsorption and the change in resistivity was investigated. As a result, the adsorption of the heavy metal, such as Cd, affects the change of resistivity of the column with activated carbon in Cd solution flow experiment.
