Estimation of underground cavity size by GPR spectrum

Abstract
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is one of the geophysical exploration methods to image the subsurface quickly and precisely. But that GPR image cannot be interpreted objectively, especially in case of exploring underground cavity. For solving this problem, we focus on the spectrum analysis. We supposed that cavity exist underground and carried out the numerical simulation by using 2D finite-difference time-domain method with varying cavity size. Our simulation results showed that when cavity size is small, we cannot judge the accurate scale through time domain analysis. On the other hand, by focusing on the spectrum and comparing the formula of interference, it is possible to estimate the layer thickness and physical properties of underground cavity.
