Surface wave recorded by distributed acoustic sensing and analyzing the propagation velocity

Abstract
Management of river bank and road embankment requires more efficient way. When heavy rains or earthquake hits earth structures, sensing systems to monitor deformation in wide area and in a short time is required. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology can capacity to provide us an ideal system with low cost. DAS do not require special optical fibers and can monitor in a long distance at a time. We applied DAS for surface wave survey on a test embankment. DAS can acquire surface waves using optical fibers set in the embankment. Frequency of surface wave acquired by DAS is lower than that of record acquired by geophones. However, DAS of a current technology can be used for monitoring the basement of embankment, and higher frequency will be recorded in future, which becomes a useful tool to monitor long embankments.
