Case study of elastic modulus evaluation ahead of tunnel face using measured P-wave velocity in horizontal borehole and laboratory rock core test

Abstract
In this survey, the S-wave velocity around the borehole ahead of tunnel face was calculated based on the P-wave velocity of the horizontal borehole, and the P-wave velocity and the S-wave velocity in the laboratory tests of rock core. In addition, the dynamic elastic modulus around the borehole was compared with the dynamic elastic modulus obtained from the P-wave and S-wave velocity of the bore core, and the deformation coefficient by horizontal loading test in the borehole. As a results, the dynamic modulus of elasticity along the borehole was lower than the dynamic elastic modulus by the bore core, and higher than the deformation coefficient by horizontal loading test in the borehole. In addition, when comparing the P-wave velocity in the borehole and the dynamic elastic modulus around the borehole, a correlation was found between both. Thus, it is possible to estimate the dynamic elastic modulus around the borehole as the elastic coefficient considering the continuity of the ground based on the P-wave velocity in the borehole.
