3D-seismic survey and rock evaluation for Hyper-Kamiokande site selection (part 1)

Abstract
Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, the University of Tokyo is planning to construct a large scale underground cavity for a new cosmic ray observation facility, named Hyper Kamiokande. In order to select the candidate site for the cavity construction, we examined a effective geophysical exploration method for estimation of three dimensional rock mass classification, considering rock formations and faults around the site. As a result of the examination, we thought that the optimal method could be seismic exploration. Before a full-scale exploration, we carried out theoretical simulations and in-situ preliminary measurement tests, to clarify feasibility for large-scale 3-D exploration. In this paper, we discuss some problems raised in the simulations/tests and their countermeasure, and would like to present some recommendations for full-scale exploration.
