Tilt response around rock cavern with atmospheric pressure variation and stability evaluation of the cavity

Abstract
At the Kushikino National Petroleum Stockpile Base, crude oil has been stored in a large underground cavern since 1994. In 2003 a high precision tiltmeter system was installed in the ground to monitor the mechanical stability of the cavern. High precision tiltmeters are also capable of detecting extremely small tilt changes due to earth tide, atmospheric pressure change, earthquakes and operations. In this paper, we show the monitoring results of the microtilt changes around the cavern due to atmospheric pressure fluctuation, and discuss the mechanical stability of the cavern.
