The frequency domain electromagnetic method was used for a preliminary archaeological prospection at Dazaifu. For almost 300 years, Dazaifu was the cultural and governmental center of Kyushu, one of Japan's four main islands. It has remained an area of historical and religious significance with several important archaeological remains. Two adjacent and offset grids were surveyed using a GSSI Profiler EMP-400. Measurements were taken at three frequencies: 5 kHz, 10 kHz, and 15 kHz. Several resistive anomalies were observed and shown to be most prominent at 5 kHz, roughly 1.5 meters in depth. It is suggested that archaeological artifacts are a possible source of the anomalies. Conductivity and quadrature contour maps confirm the presence of these anomalies, and suggest that further GPR research should be carried out and analyzed to confirm the location, depth, and nature of the anomalies.
