Development of the equipment for marine MT method

Abstract
Widespread marine magnetotelluric (MT) measurement using OBEMs (Ocean Bottom Electro-Magnetometers) which are deployed from and recovered to research ships requires long time and much labor. We are developing new equipment which is mounted on an autonomous mobile vehicle for marine MT measurement to solve the problem. Developed equipment measures two electric field components and three magnetic field components which are measured by using very sensitive tri-axial MI (Magneto-Impedance) magnetic sensors. The measurements are stored into the SD flash memory with accurate time data and attitude information indicating the equipment attitude measured by tri-axial acceleration sensors and the magnetic compass in the equipment. As a result of field experiments in the university, the equipment could measure electromagnetic field variations accurately.
