Sparse Inversion of Geophysical Data Using L1 Norm Minimization

Abstract
Traditional inversion methods based on L2 norm minimization are not suitable for subsurface structure that has sharp boundaries such as a fault or a dyke. This is because that smoothness-constrained inversion generates the restricted result with smooth boundaries. In order to overcome such the problem, the L1 norm minimization in consideration of parameter sparsity was applied for geophysical inversion. Some examples of gravity and self-potential inversions are shown in this paper.
