Comparison of the two MLM methods for horizontal component f-k spectra

Abstract
We develop a new maximum likelihood method (MLM) of the f-k spectra for horizontal components. We examined whether the method is more useful than another MLM developed by Saito by the comparison of the two methods in terms of the reduction of the effect of the side lobe in f-k spectra, and the precision of phase velocities inferred from microtremor recordings obtained by different-size arrays. The conclusions drawn are as follows. 1. The reduction of the effect of the side lobe is larger for our method than for the other method, in particular to small size arrays. 2. The phase velocities measured by our method are slightly lower than those by the other method in particular to the small size arrays.
