Monitoring of water infiltration process into a model levee

Abstract
Shear wave velocity is related to stiffness of ground and key parameter to assess the stability of civil engineering structure. In this study, resistivity and shear wave tomography were conducted to verify decreasing of S-wave velocity and changing of resistivity ratio when the water content of unsaturated zone changed to high state. As a result, dense time-lapse 2D resistivity tomography clearly imaged a figure of infiltrated water into a model levee. And, S-wave velocity decreased about 10% when water infiltrated into the vadose zone. This appeared in surface part which showed relatively high resistivity. The laboratory test is needed to confirm the relationship between volumetric water content of a soil and shear wave velocity.
