Reduction of coherent noise from MT data using independent component analysis

Abstract
Magnetotelluric method is an electromagnetic method for deeper exploration using perturbation of natural electromagnetic field. The most important thing of MT data analysis at a surrounding region of urban area is to reduce cultural noise from observed data. Although the remote reference method is popular and effective to reduce noise in MT data, the strong coherent noise due to train or power line cannot be reduced by the method. A new approach to reduce coherent noise of time series data is presented in this paper. Independent component analysis (ICA) is used to remove the coherent noise from raw MT data. As the result of numerical experiment using simulation data and raw MT data, it was found that ICA was effective to separate signal and noise of MT data.
