Evaluation of synchronization time error between vehicle-borne GPR and positioning systems

Abstract
Precise positioning is essential for GPR survey to image exact locations and shapes of buried objects. The authors developed GPR system interfaced with RTK-GNSS or self-tracking of total station. The update frequencies of the GNSS and the total station are significantly low comparing with the scan rate of GPR. Since the positioning devices take a little time to determine self-location, a synchronization error occurs. When the waveform traces are correlated with positioning data during measurement operation, it is assumed that the positioning data is a past location of GPR antenna due to the time latency. We performed some experiments to detect the synchronization error and evaluated the correction time. Finally, we could successfully obtain the true image of buried objects.
