GPR survey at Funabaru ruins in Koga city, Fukuoka prefecture

Abstract
An archaeological prospecting using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was carried out at Funabaru ruins in Koga city in order to investigate the existence of buried objects and shallow subsurface structures. The survey area was divided into ten subareas (A to J). Measurements with a 250 MHz antenna were carried out at all subareas and additional measurements using a 500 MHz antenna were carried out at two different subareas (D and H), where a remarkable reflection responses were observed. In D-subarea, a clear reflection response was observed at depth of 0.6 m to 0.7 m aligned to the extension of entrance of stone chamber. In the eastern part of H-subarea, a lot of saddleries were discovered at a depth of 0.8 m. Many reflection responses were detected at H-subarea at the depth of 1 m. The thickness of their responses is approximately 0.5 m.
