The development of 3D visualization system applied in the seabed environmental survey

Abstract
Recently, underwater vehicles are now focused as one of methods to survey the seabed resource. So JAMSTEC begins to design and construct a multiple observation system applying an underwater vehicle in order to permanently survey and observe the seabed area in real time. It is mainly composed of an underwater vehicle, which surveys and observes the seabed, and a seabed station, which supplies the electric power to the underwater vehicle and connect/communicate to a landing station. In this paper, a 3D visualization system applied to the underwater vehicle in the seabed environmental survey is described. It can visualize three-dimensionally the seabed topography and benthic marine organism owing to compensating the underwater optical characteristic. And also, it can measure kinematics information with milli-order. It is shown that it is one of effective methods to quantitatively evaluate seabed environment change.
