3-D modeling of gravity method using hexahedral element

Abstract
In three-dimensional forward modeling of gravity exploration, the subsurface structure is often discretized by cuboid. But cuboid is not effective for more complicated shapes of anomalous bodies. Therefore three-dimensional forward modeling program of the gravity exploration using the hexahedral element was developed. This program can calculate gravity anomaly by using coordinate transformation and Gauss-Legendre quadrature. Using this program, the models of geological structure of fault, volcano, and caldera were calculated. As an example of the simulation of the three-dimensional subsurface structure, a gravity simulation of Aso caldera was done. The program was confirmed to show accuracy behavior by comparing the measured gravity exploration data and the calculation result by the model.
