Utilization of Android devices for data acquisition and analysis of exploration geophysics

Abstract
Recent advances of near surface geophysics closely relate to significant progresses of computing machines. Analysis environment of geophysical jobs using PC has taken a firm hold on engineering applications in a few decades. The availability of high computing power and user-friendliness of PC based analysis environment made specialistic works more popular. Here recently, smart devices such like smartphones or tablets are spreading rapidly. We expect that utilization of these devices will also help improvements and advances of geophysical jobs. In this paper, we will introduce examples of utilization of Android devices in geophysical works. We used Android devices for improving field works of Capacitive-Coupled Resistivity-meter (CCR). We also conducted a performance evaluation of commercial Android devices using a simulation of 2D wave field. On the improvement of CCR, we used an Android device as a light-weight data acquisition instrument. We implemented a wireless communication to CCR with Android device with relatively low cost. Furthermore, we confirmed that commonly commercialized Android devices have enough capability to be used for quick analysis of geophysical works on field.
