Joint inversion using magnetic and DC resistivity data with the FCM clustering technique

Abstract
We present a 3D joint inversion method to estimate two physical parameters, magnetization and resistivity of subsurface materials. In the method, we introduce the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering technique in their joint inversion to relate the magnetic and DC resistivity data. For numerical tests, we focus on SMS as an exploration target. We apply our joint inversion method to demonstrate the accuracy of our method in the estimation of subsurface magnetization and of resistivity anomalies for estimating the amount of resources quantitatively. We calculated the noise-contaminated synthetic data expected on the SMS model. In the individual inversion results from either magnetization or resistivity only, the resolution and accuracy of inverted results were not satisfactory though the results could detect underground anomalies of magnetization and resistivity. On the other hand, the joint inversion results, which have the advantages of both magnetic and DC resistivity inversion, show better accuracy and resolution than the individual ones.
