The SP inversion for the estimation of permeability considering the effect of unsaturated zone

Abstract
The SP measured on the surface is a spatial function of multi-parameters, i.e., permeability, streaming current coefficient and resistivity. The SP distribution is also affected by that of unsaturated zones in groundwater flow. For the accurate analysis of SP, these parameters have to be taken into account. In this study, we developed a 2D inversion program considering the relationship among these parameters. However, the calculation of Jacobian matrix of SP profile considering the effect of unsaturated zone is complex. To make this calculation simple, we used the adjoint state method in our inversion. The inversion results considering an unsaturated zone show the strong contrast between the background and the zone of permeability anomalies compared with those without the consideration to the unsaturated zone. The former could reconstruct the permeability model, especially the value of permeability anomalies, given in the synthetic model. Our results indicate that the consideration of unsaturated zone is necessary for the accurate estimation of permeability structure from SP profile.
