Self-potential inversion considering the relationship between permeability and streaming current coefficitnt

Abstract
In this study, we expanded our inversion scheme for the estimation of permeability structure from self-potential (SP) profile on the ground surface. We use the empirical relationship between permeability and streaming current coefficient for our inversion. This relationship does not depend on the kind of soil or rock, and is available for the quantitative analysis of SP even in the case that subsurface structure has heterogeneity. Our inversion scheme modifies both the permeability and streaming current coefficient models simultaneously with this empirical equation. We also test the smoothness constraints in our inversion, based on a priori information of resistivity structure, independently obtained by other surveys such as the electrical resistivity tomography. These modifications of SP inversion improve the resolution of estimated permeability structures.
