Resolution of full waveform inversion in marine controlled-source electromagnetic exploration

Abstract
A 3D full waveform inversion method is presented using controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) method. Using synthetic data simulated for a synthetic model, we demonstrate that conductive anomalies beneath the surface could be estimated. We discuss the resolution of our CSEM inversion method, considering the orientation of the dipoles of transmitters and receivers. The synthetic inversion results show that horizontal location of conductivity anomalies would be imaged using horizontal dipole sources with high resolution, although the vertical dipole has low resolution for horizontal location. These differences of the inversion results are explained when considering the secondary induced electric current. From our numerical results, we conclude that it is efficient to employ dipoles of plural orientations both for transmitter and for receivers to apply our inversion method with the high resolution.
