Numerical study on relationship between seismic scattering and crustal stress

Abstract
Coda-Q is a stochastic parameter reflecting the heterogeneities of medium that seismic waves travel through. We investigate a relationship between crustal stress field and the coda-Q. In this study, we consider how to estimate the coda-Q stably from a coda wave. Concretely, various coda time windows having different initial time are applied to the coda wave. As the result, it is revealed that there is the appropriate initial time for the window. The window having too early or late initial time produces the less stable value of coda-Q. With the appropriate coda time window, we confirmed that the coda-Q would vary with the stress loaded to elastic medium using a numerical simulation of seismic wave propagation. The coda-Q is seemed to have proportional relationship with magnitude of the stress.
