We use brine of salinity 2% and subjected to cooling down from the temperature of -3oC to -12oC to observe effect of heterogeneity in wave propagation. When brine is subjected to freezing, only pure water convert into ice and salt remains in solution with increasing salinity of the solution with decreasing temperature. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is applied to estimate amount of unfrozen brine. We observed the heterogeneity in partially frozen brine sample slices at temperatures -3oC, -5oC, -7oC, and -12oC. Two-dimensional porosity at each temperature is estimated by using image analysis technique. Gassmann equation for porous medium is used to calculate theoretical compressional wave velocity, which is compared to those obtained from laboratory waveform measurement. Compressional wave velocity in partially frozen brine is measured in laboratory by using conventional pulse transmission technique.
