Clarifying the condition in landfills using resistivity and induced polarization methods

Abstract
In recent years, a stable supply of resources is one of the most important factors in Japan. Discarded electrical appliances contain various kinds of useful metal. However, in Japan, solid wastes were not done intermediate care and dumped into landfills until 2000. On the other hand, Fundamental Law for Establishing a Recycling Based Society was enacted in 2000. Therefore, it is expected that metal enriched zones exist in landfill buried before 2000. We have examined the change of property, the content and the movement of moisture in landfills. As a result, the concentrations of valuable metals were clarified. In order to identify metal-enriched zones in landfills, a non-destructive three-dimensional prospecting system that employs resistivity and induced polarization measurements was developed.
