| Abstract | Levee systems located not only in Tohoku Region but also in Kanto Region were severely damaged at many places by the East Japan Earthquake of magnitude (Mw) 9.0, which occurred on Friday, 2011 March 11. Since 2005, we have conducted integrated geophysical surveying for the safety assessment of levee systems at 23 actual levee sites. Among them, two sites were heavily damaged by the East Japan Earthquake just at the anomaly parts characterized by low S-wave velocities and low resistivity. This suggests a physical model that nonlinear loosening of clay layers had caused ground failures and damaged levee systems. |
