On-site evaluation for solute transport in vadose zone using cross borehole radar

Abstract
Clarification and quantitative estimation of phenomena in the deep vadose zone are essential and necessary in environmental science and engineering. However, it is difficult to clarify these phenomena because of a lack of proper measurement methods. We propose a method to monitor soil water and solute dynamics in the vadose zone and examined the applicability of this method in an actual highly contaminated area. The proposed method can estimate the sequential distribution of water content and solute concentrations over time and is a non-destructive technique. The advantageous features of this method enable us to clarify the effect of non-uniformity on solute transport.
