Design of GPR antenna array for pavement Survey

Abstract
Ground penetrating radar has been proven to be a useful non-destructive tool for pavement evaluation. GPR antenna array can be employed to measure multi-offset data to obtain subsurface velocity. In this way, the accuracy of the thickness estimation can be improved. In this paper we try to find an effective antenna configuration for the pavement inspection. 13 antenna configurations using one circularly-polarized spiral antenna and two linearly-polarized antennas were investigated on a gypsum model. From the common source multi-offset radar profiles, velocity spectrums were calculated to demonstrate the performances of each antenna configuration visually. The reflection amplitudes and signal-to-clutter ratio of radar signals of each antenna configuration were also compared. Among the 13 investigated antenna configurations, spiral antenna as transmitter and Vivaldi antenna placed in tangential direction have the best performance.
