Comparison of electromagnetic scattering from flat and rough single rock fracture models

Abstract
Understanding the scatting mechanism of EM waves from single fracture model is the key for complete awareness of subsurface fracture network systems. Based on this, we simulated synthetic single fracture aperture by Finite Difference Time Domain method with different rough surfaces and compare this numerical results with the flat fracture aperture case. Also, we derived mathematical solution for electromagnetic reflectivity from single fracture aperture when it has flat surface by using ABCD matrix and calculated EM multiple reflection from the flat fracture model. We observe the electromagnetic scattering for one rough fracture and examine the electromagnetic scattering properties from various fracture rough surfaces we concluded that the cross polarization is more significant property for roughness change of fracture as it increases with fracture roughness increasing.
