Design of wide-band antenna using numerical calculation and its application to GPR

Abstract
Ground-penetrating radar enables us to investigate the shallow part of structure. There are two points for improving the performance of GPR. First, we need to increase the penetration depth we can investigate, although GPR give us shallower information with depth of a few meter. Second, we need to make GPR resolution higher than now to distinguish between anomalous objects and the others clearly. The penetration depth and resolution of GPR is influenced by the shape of antenna. The numerical calculation has not been frequently used when we design the shape of antenna, so we use the finite difference time domain method. In this study, we change the depth of anomalous objects, physical property of the ground, design of antenna, and compare each wave forms that get the receiving antenna. As a result, we get the characteristic wave form respectively.
