Field test of microtremor survey in Shanghai and Tianshui, China

Abstract
In China, after the Wenchuan earthquake that occurred in last year, the reconstruction and new earthquake disaster prevention program demands a simple and effective method for site characterization, and microtremor surveys are expected. To study the characteristics and applicability of microtremor for structure survey in China, we carried out field tests of array microtremor survey in Tianshui city in northwest China and long period microtremor observation in Shanghai, the biggest city of China with high buildings on soft ground. The result of field test in Tianshui shown that, the microtremors with frequency higher than 1.5Hz are strong enough for observation and can be used for survey of structure around 100m deep in northwest China. However, microtremors around 1Hz are very weak and need to be studied further. The result of field test in Shanghai shown that the power spectrum of microtremors observed in Shanghai are similar to that in Kanto Plane in Japan, infers a high applicability of array microtremor survey in Shanghai and its vicinity.
