Detection of interval between P-waves in proximity AE doublets by windowed cepstrum analysis

Abstract
We describe a new technique to analyze similar microseismic events with a short interval. Similar microseismic events with a very short interval are called proximity AE doublets herein. In proximity AE doublets, the second event with a similar waveform arrives before attenuation of the first event. Precise relative location between AE sources can be estimated from the interval between AE doublets. Cepstrum analysis has been used to analyze proximity AE doublets. However, a cepstrum of proximity AE doublets has two peaks that represent intervals of a P-wave and S-wave between the two events. It is difficult to determine a peak of the P-wave interval only in the cepstrum. We use a window with variable length to determine the peak of the P-wave interval in the cepstrum of the proximity AE doublets. We examine this signal processing technique in a computer simulation and apply it to acoustic emission data that were observed in Soultz HDR field.
