Study on rock physical interpretation of shallow geophysical data -PartII- -Rock physics modeling of soft sedimentary rocks-

Abstract
We have started studying rock physical interpretation of shallow geophysical data. We firstly collected the data of physical properties of rocks obtained in laboratory tests and well loggings and then used these data for preliminary study of applicability of the existing rock physics models. In this paper, existing rock physics models are applied to soft sedimentary rocks which are widely distributed in Japan to evaluate their applicability. Main features of a soft sedimentary rock of its dependency on the grain size and confining pressure are modeled with the bimodal mixture model and predictions of porosity and clay contents for the elastic constants are compared to the observed ones. This comparison reveals very good agreement of both data and high applicability of the sandy shale model of the bimodal mixture model to a soft sedimentary rock.
