A plane-wave decomposition into P- and S-waves for vector elastic wave fields

Abstract
In combined P and S observations with multi-component geophones, recognition of the individual P and S arrivals may form a considerable problem. We describe a method to separate a vector elastic wave fields recorded at three-component geophones into P, SV, and SH waves. The separation scheme is based on a plane-wave decomposition in F-K domain. In this paper, we apply the method to 3C-3D synthetic data and 3C-3D real data. For the synthetic data, the method succeeded in separating wave fields into each mode. For the real data, the method yielded higher S/N ratio and enabled us to recognize the P-SV converted waves.
