Applicability of electromagnetic sounding for evaluation of geological features over the large overburden tunnel

Abstract
The accurate evaluation of the geological features in deeper part of tunnel ground is very vital for tunnel construction. The HEM is suitable method for presuming the distribution of geological boundary, fault, alteration zone, weathering part and underground water, based on resistivity change in shallower part. The CSAMT is also suitable method for presuming the change in the geological structure in tunnel line based on resistivity change in deeper part. The authors carried out the HEM and CSAMT on a large overburden tunnel ground that constructed in accretionary complex areas of Hokkaido, Japan. In this report, result of examining applicability in the geological features evaluation by HEM and CSAMT on the large overburden tunnel is described with comparing results of clarified geological condition out of tunnel excavation.
