Tsunami simulation by using the wave equation

Abstract
We present the new method for tsunami simulation in order to show the validation of information of compression waves in the oceans for early forecast of tsunami arrival. We resort to numerical simulation to obtain the relationship between compression waves which propagate in the oceans and tsunami, because we cannot expect so much observation data. In this study, it is the wave equation that we use to simulate the propagation of tsunami at the surface of the oceans simultaneously with compression waves which propagate in the body of the oceans. In the numerical calculation in the fluid regions, potential formulation is used because it is not enough to set the shear modulus to zero. We use the Spectral Element Method for spatial discretization not only to get sufficient resolution for the waves but also to use explicit finite-difference scheme in time without too much computational cost.
