1D simulation of marine EM mthod for oil and methane hydrate exploration

Abstract
We conducted a 1D model study on the use of the marine CSEM method for oil and methane explorations. While it is showed that both oil and methane-hydrate reservoirs can be detected using CSEM in a common field situation, some potential problems are highlighted. For oil exploration where the reservoir is located at depth, the effect of air wave needs to be accounted for. For methane-hydrate exploration where the reservoir is present at much shallower depth and where its resistivity contrast is much smaller, it is critical to choose higher frequencies at which the signal coming from the reservoir is appreciable.
