Imaging method without influence of GPR survey direction using vector field analysis

Abstract
GPR is now widely used in shallow subsurface exploration. In the processing of GPR data, scalar imaging algorithms have been generally used. However, these migration methods cannot describe the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic wave in a vector wave field. Therefore, observation records are sometimes affected by the geometry between a GPR survey line and a buried pipe. In this study, we generated first 3D GPR datasets including polarization characteristics with FDTD simulations and in a field survey. Second, we applied multi-component migration which was derived from vector field analysis. Finally, In order to evaluate the advantage of multi-component migration, we also applied the Gazdag phase-shift migration to the same datasets and compared with the results of the multi-component migration. We conclude that the result analyzed by the multi-component migration can stably describe correct structures using GPR data recorded on any GPR survey directions.
