Study on geophysical methods and instruments for investigation of river embankments (Part I) - Project overview and summary of 2006 study -

Abstract
Internal structure of the river embankment must be characterized in investigation for its safety evaluation. Geophysical methods can be the most effective means for that purpose if they are used together with geotechnical methods including drilling. However geophysical methods have not very often employed so far due to their problems on accuracy, reliability and cost. We have therefore started a study on geophysical methods and instruments for investigation of river embankment to solve those problems. We established a research consortium consisting of 41 members from 18 organizations to carry out this three year research project. Last year we have conducted field feasibility studies of ten geophysical methods at a model and real river embankments. Based on the feasibility evaluation, the more applicable methods will be selected through further field tests in this year in order to make a final design proposal of the optimum geophysical system for investigation of river embankment.
