| Abstract | SAGD process is highly affected by geology and reliable reservoir models are required for forecast of the SAGD performance. In this study, AVO attributes were examined for their potential of facies discrimination that is a key step of the reservoir characterization and modeling in the Athabasca oil sands. Three-term AVO analysis was conducted and followed by inversion technique and additional transformations to produce several AVO attributes, such as P-impedance, S-impedance, VP/VS, Lambda-Rho and Mu-Rho. Statistical features of these attributes were checked by means of histogram, map and cross plot to indicate a potential of the AVO attributes, especially of VP/VS, as discriminators between sands and mudstones. Physical meaning of the attributes in regards to S-wave velocity was qualitatively discussed in combination with a behavior of bitumen as solid in pour space. Discussion on seismic attributes in relation to background physics is important and expected to enhance quality and reliability of the resulted reservoir models. |
